iPhone AppStore Update Problem – 0xE800002E
I’ve now been struggling/living with an update problem with iTunes for a number of weeks. Infact, pretty much since I got my iPhone.
In summary, when the AppStore indicates that their are updates for applications, they are downloaded, and then the iPhone is synchronised. This is where the problem starts, Error 0xE800002E is then given for one or more applications, and the relevant update not applied.
iTunes iPhone sync error message 0xE800002E
The recently released 2.1 firmware doesn’t make any difference, BUT, a quick fix of
Delete the Application from the iPhone
reApply the Application to the iPhone
Will get around the problem, * BUT * this is only until the next update.
The main annoyance of this, is that the local data, like user ids, passwords etc is lost when the application is removed, so has to be re-entered each time. High scores etc, are lost with no method of getting them back without playing a game again.
Come on Apple, give this some sort of priority.
I’m not the only one, there are lots of information on the web about it:
BUT, until it is fixed, this is just another thorn in the side of what should be a good product.
[although I hear the first Android handset is out next week (at least in some countries)…maybe….]
Come on Apple, get it sorted

Yep, this has been happening to me too – also, I can’t copy appstore purchases from my iPhone to my iTunes library… Its a sick, horrible joke – why is this still happening?
Has anyone got a better fix?
I have no fix, I just live in the nightmare.
I called Apple, they got me to delete iTunes, reinstall, delete Mobile Devices, reinstall, delete all the apps out of the iTunes folder, delete all the apps off the phone (this really pissed me, since its hard to remember all the apps I have purchased and they said they could not help me!). Nothing has worked.
I only purchase apps off the iPhone, not from iTunes (since it could not sync on day one I left it alone). iTunes can’t be bothered copying over the apps I have purchased anymore. iPhone Appstore tells me that there is updates. I download the update on the iPhone, which ticks away and downloads it ALL, then I am advised it couldn’t (even though it did) and it will be waiting on iTunes. So I look there, yup, its waiting, I download it. Sync and fail.
That’s the end of the story.
I don’t reckon its the phone. I don’t reckon its the app. I don’t reckon its the iPhone appstore.
I reckon it’s iTunes and its pissed off cause I don’t use it to buy apps, so I am being punished.
I am testing the problem at the moment. (Which is why I found this blog)
1) Attempt to update app on iPhone Appstore
2) Download starts and completes, nothing abnormal
3) Installing… Pop up. “Unable to Download Application” [Done] [Retry]
4) Retry (will return to step 3)
5) Delete version of App that it is replacing (step 3 might interrupt, you’ll get it)
7) Install completes
I had a few apps to update without user data and have replicated the steps. Step 3 happens at different speeds depending on app and make it hard to do. You can [tap] the installing App to Pause it (May require off/on to finish install.
Obviously you can delete the App first.
But I tested in that way to isolate the reason.
Perhaps it is a failed attempt at fixing the “user data deletes issue”, trying to make you sync and backup, in case something goes wrong.
I have been deleting and re-installing the application for quite awhile.
But, i’ve had enough.
I’m now contemplating a full reset of the iphone… Maybe when i have some spare time.
Question: Q: Application update problem
The application was previously on my iPhone and this was after trying to apply an update to the application. The above message is from iTunes — If I try to update the app from my iPhone it teels me that it is unable to download application — Units will be available when you login to the iTunes store on your computer.

Erase it off your phone (hold app till it jiggles and then press black X and say yes to delete).
Download the updated app. Sync with your computer. Uncheck the app from your application list. Resync. Re-check app and sync again. The sync will load the new version. Unfortunately if it is a game you will probably lose your settings and high scores.

I too am having the same problem. iPhone says the update will be available when I log into iTunes, but when I do and sync up, it says couldn’t update because «unknown error occured»!
The only thing that works is removing the apps from my iPhone and then syncing up with the updated apps in my iTunes. It works but it is really annoying and it should not be that way. And not even a restore works. REDICULOUS!

I have the same problem. To solve this I have to remove all of the applications that need to be updated first, then reinstall them. The thing that stinks is that this removes all data in the application. Really lame.
**Haha didn’t know s-ucks would be *** out. Changed to stinks.

It is infuriating if you want to update on the move!! Basically, you cant!!
And if you have an App that you have added stuff to manually, you lose it!
Anyone know if iTunes 8.01 fixes this issue.
Its the last problem on my phone, all others have been sorted (apart from Safari crashing).

8.01 doesnt make any difference.
You have to go through a silly procedure of deleting downloading syncing!! All for a little app.
Apple. sort this out!! Its ******* me off and you are becoming like Microsoft.

Just thought I’d add to this list of people ****** off. I can’t get several of my apps to install no matter what I try. I get the UNABLE TO DOWNLOAD if I try to download directly to iphone. and I get the UNKNOWN ERROR message when I try to sync them from itunes.
And absolutely nothing I do helps. including restoring, or uninstalling all all the apps and then re-installing. <edited by host> Pretty sad it’s come to this.

I seem to have cracked it!!
Well it has worked for me and I have just updated my first App through my iphone.
I deleted all Apps from iTunes, I deleted all Apps from my iPhone. I then went through the re-install process for my iPhone, this reinstalled the software and firmware.
I then synched my iPhone.
After all that I then downloaded all Apps I had previously to iTunes. You shouldnt have to re-pay for any you have previously paid for.
Synched my iPhone and so far so good. I updated an App and it seemlessy updated and remained in the position on my iPhone!
